Now Geek This: Marvel Movie Madness!

nowgeekthisIt is a good time to be a Marvel fan.  As a longtime comic book reader, and a huge Marvel fan going back to my childhood days, it has always been a dream of mine to see my favorite Marvel superheroes on the big screen.  For the first half of my life, that dream seemed impossible.  Marvel’s rival, DC comics had a couple of good movies under their belt starring their biggest characters like Superman and Batman, yet Marvel had nothing to offer their fans  but failed attempts or cheesy interpretations of their characters.

That all changed in 1998 with the release of the movie Blade, a film based on a Marvel character that was actually pretty good.    Soon after that, fans were given the gift of films based on both the X-Men and Spider-Man.  Marvel then used the power of those films to create their own movie company, Marvel Studios, which brought us Ironman in 2008.  Ironman was the beginning of a Marvel movie empire that would lead us to The Avengers in 2012, a movie that seemed an impossible dream until the day it realesed.  The Avengers marked the end of what Marvel Studios called their “phase one” films.  Next May, Marvel will release Avengers: Age of Ultron, marking the end of “phase two” along with next summer’s Ant-Man film.  This week, Marvel announced their plans for all of their “phase three” movies, and the heads of geeks around the world exploded with joy. I have, in fact, just recently recovered from my head exploding to write this article in which I will discuss my thoughts on each upcoming film.

Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6. 2016

Phase three begins with Captain America: Civil War, the third film starring the first Avenger.  This movie is interesting for several reasons.  To begin with, there is the title.  Civil War was a large, company wide event in the comics that split the Marvel universe in two, pitting hero against hero based on whether they were for or against heroes registering with the government.  The story found Avengers leaders Ironman and Captain America facing off against each other, each with their own team of heroes backing them.  It has been reported that Robert Downey Jr. has been paid a large sum to reprise his role as Tony Stark in this movie, possibly his last time donning the armor, which makes sense knowing that the story will cover this storyline.  The title of this film also leads to some questions in the minds of Marvel fans.  Mainly, is it too early to cover the Civil War story?  In the comics, the story involved just about the entire pantheon of Marvel heroes, encompassing hundreds of characters.  With that in mind, are there enough characters in the Marvel Cinematic universe to give this movie the impact it should have?  One thought, and hope, that I had was that perhaps this movie might be a good way to introduce some heroes as well.  Perhaps Cap and Ironman could be fighting over these new heroes, trying to recruit them to their teams.  Also, this is a Captain America movie, which leads me to wonder if any of the other Avengers will also be in this film or not.  If they did appear, wouldn’t that just make it an Avengers film?  If they don’t appear, then will there be a good reason why they don’t get involved?  Finally, what about the Winter Soldier?  Will he be involved in this movie?  The second Captain America move ended leaving fans with the impression that Bucky’s story was only beginning.  Where will the Winter Soldier fit into the Civil War movie storyline exactly?  I have full confidence that Marvel studios will answer all of these questions in a way that will make us fans happy.

DrStrange

Doctor Strange opens on November 4, 2016

The next film announced is Doctor Strange.  Doctor Strange, for those who are not familiar, is Marvel’s “Sorcerer Supreme”, a character who deals with the mystical and occult side of the Marvel universe.  There has been a lot of rumors about this film, mostly about the casting of the lead character.  Everyone from Johnny Depp to Ryan Gosling has been rumored to play main character Stephen Strange, and the latest rumors say that Benedict Cumberbatch is in final talks to play the role, though that has not been made official as of yet.  As far as storyline goes, there is a wide range of comic stories involving Doctor Strange that can be culled for a movie, and he has even been a member of the Avengers.  It will be interesting to see how Doctor Strange fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and just what he brings to the table.  I am a huge Doctor Strange fan, and I have been very excited about this movie from the first moment I was made aware of it.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 opens on May 5, 2017

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 opens on May 5, 2017

The next movie to be released will be Guardians of the Galaxy Two.  Not much has been announced about the film other than the fact that it will be released two months earlier than originally thought, and will once again be directed by James Gunn.  The first Guardians was so good that, honestly, I don’t need to know much more than that to know that I am going to love this sequel.  The only real question is, will this sequel pull our beloved guardians closer to the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or will they remain on the fringe out in the universe?  I have a feeling that it will be the former since the character Thanos is so closely interwoven between them all.

Thor: Ragnarok opens July 28, 2017

Thor: Ragnarok opens July 28, 2017

Next up, we have Thor: Ragnarok, the third movies starring the Asgardian hero Thor.  This movie will be interesting on many levels.  As we have seen with Ironman and will see with Captain America, the third movie in the Marvel franchises seems to bring huge changes, and Ragnarok sounds like it will continue the trend.  For starters, Ragnarok is known in Norse mythology as their version of the apocalypse, and it should prove to be a spectacular addition to the MCU.  Additonally, head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige has stated that Ragnarok is an important movie for phase three that will take Thor to another level, and will impact everything that comes after it.  That sounds pretty major to me.

Black Panther opens on November 3, 2017

Black Panther opens on November 3, 2017

Marvel follows up the third Thor movie with a new character when they release Black Panther at the end of 2017.  In the Marvel universe, Black Panther is the prince of an African nation known as Wakanda, who also fills the role as the nation’s protector as the hero Black Panther.  Chadwick Boseman has been signed on to play the Black Panther.  It has been announced that the Panther and his isolationist nation will be introduced in Captain America: Civil War, and it will be interesting to see what role he plays in that film.  It will be interesting to see how the Black Panther does in a solo film.

Avengers; Infinity War, Part 1 opens May 4, 2018

Avengers; Infinity War, Part 1 opens May 4, 2018

That brings us into 2018, and what will no doubt be the hugest film in Marvel’s phase three, or part of the hugest film at least, Avengers: Infinity War, Part One.  It is blatantly obvious that every Marvel movie from the first Ironman has been leading up to this story.  This is going to be the ultimate (no pun intended) story in the MCU without question.  A story so big, it had to be split into two parts in fact.  This will bring the cosmic villain Thanos, who we have only seen glimpses of thus far, front and center and will no doubt involve the Infinity Gauntlet, perhaps the most powerful weapon in the entire Marvel Universe.  The gauntlet is made up of six “Infinity Gems”, and we have already seen several of those introduced to the MCU.  This will no doubt be a giant spectacle of a film with tons of death and destruction, and will no doubt leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe completely changed afterwards.  The only real question will be what version of the Avengers will we see squaring off against Thanos.  Oh, and, will we perhaps see the Guardians of the Galaxy show up to help in the war?

CaptainMarvel

Captain Marvel opens on July 6, 2018

After part one of Infinity War, the next movie in Marvel’s lineup will be Captain Marvel.  This will be an interesting film coming out at an interesting time in the phase three scheduling.  Being place directly between parts one and two of Avengers: Infinity War, it will be interesting to see just what  part Captain Marvel will play in the Infinity War.  Will this film show the origin of how Carol Danvers becomes Captain Marvel as a part of Inifinity War?  Carol is a human from earth, but the powers of Captain Marvel are cosmic in nature.  Will this movie take place during the time of Infinity War, or will it cover an early period in the MCU history before the war, letting fans get used to Captain Marvel before she shows up as the cavalry in Avengers: Infinity War, part 2?  Caprtain Marvel’s role could be one of the deciding factors that turns the tide for the Avengers.  On a side note, Captain Marvel will be Marvel Studios’ first film starring a female lead on her own, and that will hopefully lead to more female-led movies.

Inhumans

Inhumans opens November 2, 2018

That leads us into the next film, Inhumans in November of 2018.  This will be an interesting movie in its own right.  The Inhumans in the Marvel Universe are a race of people with superpowers that have their own kingdom and consider themselves separate from the rest of the world.  The announcement of this movie has raised the question of whether this could be Marvel’s answer to mutants like the X-Men whose movie rights are currently owned by 20th Century Fox.  If that’s the case, one wonders if Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, who will be introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, will be considered Inhumans instead of mutants as they are in the comics.  Either way, Marvel Studios has stated that they feel that the Inhumans could possibly branch off as their own franchise on their own.  What role will the Inhumans play in the MCU, and how what effect will they have on Avengers: Infinity War?  Could the Inhumans and Captain Marvel show up in part two of Infinity War as the cavalry that saves the day?

Avengers; Infinity War, Part 2 opens May 3, 2019

Avengers; Infinity War, Part 2 opens May 3, 2019

That lead us to the final movie in Marvel’s “phase three”, Avengers: Infinity War, Part Two.  This movie will be the culmination of every Marvel Studios movie before it, and it will be massive.  You can expect this to be an action packed, non-stop film that will leave you fully spent afterwards.  If you know anything about the comic storyline this movie is based on, you will know that this movie will be the biggest Marvel Studios movie EVER!  I am so excited for this movie that I actually get the chills every time I think about it.  Fan expectations will be high for this movie, and I know Marvel Studios can deliver.  I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS MOVIE!  That is all I can say about Avengers: Infinity War, Part Two.

As I stated at the beginning of this article, it is a good time to be a Marvel fan.  Correction, it is a truly amazing time to be a Marvel fan!  ‘Nuff said.

That’s the end of this edition of Now Geek This.  Tune in next time for our next exciting adventure.
