Marvelette Missives – Deadpool v Gambit

In the miniseries Deadpool v Gambit (released as a trade last fall), the Merc with a Mouth teams up with the smooth Cajun con man to, what else, pull another con. The two have a secret history of working together even though, as happens with most people who know him, Gambit doesn’t much like Deadpool. But the real issue here is who’s really being conned?!

The plot involves not only the con job (which seems pretty straightforward), but more than a little magic and a mixing/loss/heightening of powers, making things really interesting for the duo. That last bit comes courtesy of The Scrambler, who actually gets a decently fleshed out sub plot. And then there’s the part where Deadpool gets imbued with an unlikely power and becomes Deadfist (yep, it’s just what it sounds like).

If you’re a fan of either of these characters, you’re likely to enjoy this miniseries. It has a good story with a few twists, plenty of violence and, not surprisingly, a lot of humor. It’s always entertaining to see how “normal” characters handle having to work with the insanity of Deadpool. Of course things never go as planned because Deadpool always has an alternate plan that he thinks will work better but often makes little sense. And that’s the fun of reading this.
