It is Meredith’s world, and we are just living in it.

When we spoke with Meredith Finch on the We Be Geeks podcast, it was just before her new project for Image Comics called Rose came out. We are now two issues in. With issue 2 having released on May 17th. When we spoke to Meredith about the new project, one of the things she was most excited about was Rose being her own character, and the setting was the world that she had created. She had just come off a great run on Wonder Woman, and with the history that comes with such a historic character, she was excited to be able to stretch her legs on her own creation. Stretch her legs she has. It’s Meredith’s world, and we’re just living in it. Her co-conspirator on this venture is artist Ig Guara, whose art fits this fantasy story so well. One of my favorite aspects of his art is his facial expressions. He makes Rose look fierce, and feminine at the same time.

I have always been a fan of the fantasy genre, this began when my sister bought me the Lord of the Rings trilogy for Christmas. Seeing the rich fantasy world that Meredith created for Rose is a breath of fresh air in a comic medium that is saturated with costumes. We have everything that makes a great fantasy adventure in Rose. Swords? Check. Magic? Check. Evil ruler bent on world domination? Check and double check. We also have the main character Rose whose background is shrouded in mystery. In issue 2 we get to see a bit more of Rose coming of age. Oh yeah, did I mention this was a coming of age story as well? The story unfolds at a tantalizingly slow pace. You want to know everything, but reveals just enough to keep you reading. This issue we learn that Rose is just a wee bit headstrong and if she ever gets a handle on her ability she is going to be a force to be reckoned with. I like the fact that she is still learning and can trip on her own sword from time to time, instead of being all powerful at the beginning

We also get to finally see one of the mythical giant Khats, Thorne. He kind of reminds me of Aslan from The Chronicles of Narnia. When he awakens the whole world senses it. I can’t wait until next issue where hopefully we have a Thorne and Rose meeting.
