Marvelette Missives

Marvelette Missives – Absolutely Marvel-ous

Over the past year I’ve become a fan of the current incarnation of Captain Marvel. Why would I phrase it that way? Well, most people would guess I’m a Marvel fan (don’t look so shocked), so I’m obviously not talking about the DC hero. But the Marvel version has had a half dozen or so folks carrying the mantel. It’s not to say I’m not interested in the earlier Captains, but thus far it’s Carol Danvers who has me hooked. More

Marvelette Missives – Heavy Petting

As a geek and an animal lover, I’ve always loved seeing the sidekick pets on page and screen. Now I’m not talking about a dog or cat who happens to just be around and has no part in the story except for a brief mention. Nor am I referring to the anthropomorphic talking animals that are partners to the main characters. It has appeared in a few main Marvel titles and has also had a couple of short-run comics series of its own. More

Marvelette Missives – The One About Deadpool

My favorite comic book character (can’t exactly say superhero) is Deadpool. For some reason, this seems to take many people by surprise (mostly male, mostly those who don’t know me very well). Admittedly, Deadpool is not a “girly” character, nor are the majority of his plotlines what would be considered female friendly (in other words, they’re usually violent as all get out). So why is he my favorite? More

Marvelette Missives – Too Many Comic Book Movies?!

“Why are there so many superhero movies?”

“What’s with all the comic book stuff?”

“When is Hollywood going to move on from comics?”

These questions seem to come up a lot from movie-goers, primarily the Norms (i.e., non-geeks). So let me say this first: I enjoy super hero movies and don’t think there are too many of them. Now that that’s out of the way, let me explain. More
