WPG Ep165: 24 Reasons With Couch Tomato

This week, the team is all together again ready to take on the podcasting world. The Doctor Strange trailer just dropped and we are pretty excited to watch it. The guest of honor is the talented YouTube personality, Couch Tomato. Couch gave the team some insight on how he started into this YouTube journey, and is a very positive voice. His 24 reasons videos are addicting and spot on. Couch is also a podcaster. His knowledge of movies is vast, and it shows in his videos. We learned that the one time he was “roasted” by fans was early on in his experience with his 24 reasons Godzilla the 1998 and 2014 versions are the same movie. Fans can be brutal, but Couch never gave up and is super successful with a huge fan base. Some new things for Couch, since he just celebrated his one year anniversary: a mobile game(Hollywood RPG), product placement videos, and #cinematiclivesmatter. We also found out some of his favorite YouTube personalities as well. You can check him out on YouTube and make suggestions of movies you would like him to compare.

WBG Ep 164: WTH C-3PO MIA

This week, the We Be Geeks gang begins by talking about Star Wars comics, particularly the new Poe Dameron ongoing series, the MIA C3-PO one-shot, and the absurd amount of variant covers coming out this month. Talking Marvel naturally leads us into a discussion about the announcement of more shows coming to Netflix like a possible Punisher or Cloak and Dagger show.
Switching gears, we then talk about Batman vs Superman, aka the Flop of Justice. We cover big box office losses that could jeopardize the future of upcoming movies before delving into a discussion about Ben Affleck’s Batman being a direct continuation of Michael Keaton’s Batman from the 1989 movie. There is talk about the dream sequences in Batman vs. Superman, including the glimpse of a post-apocalyptic future, all of which felt out of place in the movie.
We cleanse our distaste of Batman Hearts Superman with a discussion about Game of Thrones and our excitement for the upcoming season before discussing the season finale of Walking Dead. There are spoilers ahead, so be cautious if you have not watched the finale yet.
We then switch to the DC television universe with talk of the character Katie Cassidy coming to the Flash and hanging out with Vixen in future episodes.
Mike takes a few moments to talk about his stress levels and his attempts to alleviate that stress before moving on to talk about the plethora of X-Men and Avengers comic books being published by Marvel these days.
We talk briefly about pictures of Benedict Cumberbatch buying comics dressed as Doctor Strange, then move on to a story about the company Sphero updating their BB-8 toys so that the droid can react to Star Wars: The Force Awakens when you let him watch the movie alongside you.
We talk about the comic book side of DC as we discuss our thoughts on the upcoming Rebirth event, and our general feelings towards reboots of any kind.
We finish off the night with talk of Crackle and Amazon Prime, and some of the shows that can be found on those platforms, such as the Tick and Powers.

WBG Ep163: 7-11 Coffee With Get Spy Cast

This episode the crew had the pleasure of speaking with the cast and director from the web series Get Spy. We had David Beatty, Chelsea Alden, Alyson Daniel, as well as Lorin and Eric Davis. We talked season two of the series. Episode 1 is out now and new episodes will be released every Tuesday. We talk Tech Girl and her shining moment of her monologue for people not knowing her real name. We talk the difficulty of shooting a fight scene with a baby on your back with Lorin. We talk Harry Potter at the Disney theme parks. We lay out the growth of the characters for season 2 with no spoilers. We talk about the return of Alyson’s character after her apparent death in season 1. We also pitch ideas for season 3, and consider how to get that puppy funded. All in all it was a great interview with some talented creators that you don’t want to miss.

WBG Episode 162: American Pod Story

On this exciting edition of We Be Geeks, we have no guest and no Julz this week, so the boys are left to hold the fort down on their own. Sort of an American Pod StoryThe show starts off with some news that there is a new television show based on the Tick comic book series coming to Amazon Prime. The latest announcement names actor Peter Serafinowicz as the Tick himself. Next, Mike begins discussing his recent discovery of the Crackle app, which leads to a trip down memory lane as the guys discuss the classic shows and movies that can be found on the Crackle app.
After gushing about the app, the discussion moves to a big announcement from DC about the status of their upcoming movies, including Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and even Cyborg. The gang discusses the potential issues with the solo Cyborg movie, which include a concern that Cyborg might not be enough of a recognizable character for the “mainstream audience” at large.
Speaking of The Flash and DC movies, the boys discuss a statement made by director Zach Snyder concerning his decision that Grant Gustin from the WB Flash series would not fit in the vision he has for the DC filmverse. That naturally leads to a discussion about the upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie, or, as the We Be Geeks crew call it, Batman Hearts Superman: The Flop of Justice. The reviews are out for the movie, and we cover a bad review along with a good review, and what those reviews say about the film.
There is a brief mention of the announcement of Elijah Wood starring in Dirk Gently’s Hollistic Detective Agency right before Mike announces a new podcast being added to the We Be Geeks network. The new podcast will be a DC podcast run by Ken from Geek Watch One, who loyal We Be Geeks listeners may remember from our crossover episodes with Ken and Kylan. We look forward to hearing what they have to say about DC comics and movies.
After the announcement, the gang moves on to discuss the prospects of Daisy Ridely starring as Lara Croft in the next Tomb Raider movie. Then, Mike brings up the fact that the videogame Resident Evil is twenty years old this year, making all of us on the podcast feel very old.
We finish off the show with a discussion about the latest episode of Walking Dead, spoiler free of course, and the upcoming finale that has been officially clocked at ninety minutes long. There is talk of the FX series American Crime Story: The People v. O. J. Simpson, and the surprising level of foul language on the show, followed by a brief discussion of the new season of the Marvel/Netflix show Daredevil. We close the show with talk of the Fox series Gotham, sparked by the appearance of Pee Wee Herman himself, Paul Reubens on the show, which then leads to talk of the various Robins in Batman’s life.

WBG Episode 160: Clowning With Crystal Scott

This week the entire We Be Geeks team is together again. Han Solo is headed to Marvel Comics with a five issue mini series by Marjorie Liu and Mark Brooks. Crystal Scott was the guest of honor tonight, and she was such a trooper answering questions left and right. Crystal is currently making her first feature film based on her award winning short, Girl Clown. Crystal talked about her own experience as a clown, and how she became one, along with her some crazy clown stories. Crystal also has some super secret projects upcoming, but she isn’t allowed to talk about them yet. She was allowed to talk about her role in Girl Code though, and she was happy that Mike had watched it. No plans right now for a recurring role for her, but you never know. Crystal’s Kickstarter for Girl Clown is doing quite well, and the rewards are fantastic. You can check it out here(http://girlclownfeature.com/kickstarter )and support it. Every little bit helps.

WBG Episode 159: Walking In Summerland With Malcolm Danare

This week on the show, the gang starts off with a bit of hockey talk before getting to the geekery.  Hey, geeks can like sports too, right?  The topic of the night is Oscars as we discuss some of the highlights and lowlights from Sunday’s award show.  We discuss the In Memoriam section which was touching, but we also remarked on the fact that Abe Vigoda was left sadly left out.  We then discuss Mad Max winning almost all of the awards it was nominated for, except the big ones of course, and mention the all too brief appearance of our favorite droids for Star Wars.  We veer slightly into the political briefly as we discuss the awkward appearance of Stacey Dash on the Oscars before moving on to other topics.

Of course, a discussion about the Oscars would naturally segue into talk of the Gambit movie, right   The crew discusses the recent announcement that Fox has pulled the Gambit movie from their 2016 schedule, and have announced the addition of two more unnamed movies in 2017 and 2018.  Mike then makes a case for replacing Channing Tatum as Gambit for actor Lucas Black.  Perhaps that is not such a bad idea.  The standing theory seems to be that one of the newly announced movies could be Deadpool 2, and we speculate that an X-Force movie could happen soon as well.

Discussing new superhero movies leads us into a discussion about our dissatisfaction with the Amazing Spider-Man movies, and we as a whole declare that we don’t want to see anymore origin stories rebooted for the heroes that have already had their origins told.

Next, we discuss the latest news in the lead role casting for the future Iron Fist show, including our thoughts  on the complaints on the internet that Marvel and Netflix did not take the opportunity to cast an Asian actor as Iron Fist. We finish off our discussion with the 2016 Razzie awards awarded the worst movie of 2015 to the Fantastic Four.  I can’t think of a movie more deserving of a Razzie.

We then welcome our guest for the evening, actor Malcolm Danare who came on to discuss his latest movie, the horror film Smothered.  During the interview with Malcolm, we discuss his friendship with the director of Smothered, John Schneider, who is best known from a little show called The Dukes of Hazard.  Malcolm then tells about some of his other projects, such as the intriguing movie Summerland Project before we grill him about some of his past movies. Malcolm has starred in several movies that our listeners will recognize, including Lords of Discipline, Flashdance, Christine,  European Vacation, Catholic Boys (aka Heaven Help Us), Robin Hood, Men in Tights.  Malcolm also spends some time talking about his role in the nineties  version of Godzilla, which leads into a discussion about his voiceover work in several different animated shows.

WBG Epsiode 158: Again With The R Rating

Let’s talk about the weather. We start with your geek weather report. Shout-outs were given to the awesome Patty Jean Robinson, as well as Jessica Cameron. Also shout was given to Tom Hodges who has restarted their Kickstarter. We then go to the new Marvel news, starting with the new footage leaked from the set of Doctor Strange. We all agree that the costume and casting are great. We discuss the synopsis of the new Marvel show Most Wanted. We then move into discussing Stan Lee’s cameo in Deadpool, and what his complaint was with the cameo. We also talk the rumors of the last Wolverine movie being rated R and adapting the Old Man Logan storyline. That takes off on a tangent of why all the new movies are rated R. We then switch gears to DC. We talk the Batman V Superman length and possible R rating. Again with the R rating. We also talk DC rebirth and what it will mean. We talk Titans and excitement for that coming out. Julz arrives and we talk Die Hard and our homework assignments. Brett still needs to watch Labyrinth and Derek needs to watch Big Hero Six. We then talk the new DC comedy Powerless. It has some pretty big names involved in it. Vanessa Hudgens, Alan Tudyk, and Danny Pudi. Brett calls that it will not last a season. We end with some Star Wars trivia.

WBG Episode 157: The Zone Continues With Bruce Zick

This week on We Be Geeks, the team is all together for this awesome episode! Deadpool is the topic of the year. Not only because the movie was so spectacular, but because of the rating. Don’t get us wrong, Deadpool should absolutely have a giant R, but some parents were still took their little ones to see it. The team have some strong opinions on this. Also, will this set the bar for other comic movies? Only time will tell. The second half of the show starred the extremely talented, Bruce Zick from the Zone Continuum. Zick gives an up close and personal look at his inspiration behind the book. Not only does he write it, but he does the artwork for it as well. He shared his excitement for this book since it’s been over 20 years since the original Zone Continuum books were released. Zick is very in tune with his audience as the new book contains elements from the original story as well as new stories. So new readers and old readers alike can enjoy it. Bruce also talked about his background as an animator, and how much of it changes before it even hits the big screen. He also has a super secret project coming up that the team is dying to know about, but alas must wait. Bruce talked a little about his work on Atomic Legion, and Mike totally geeked out. The Zone Continuum hits comic book stores February 24th, and even though Valentine’s Day is over, buy a copy for a loved one. It’s sure to not disappoint.
The team also added a new segment to the show as well. Star Wars trivia.  Each week the team will be answering more questions. Stay tuned!

WBG Episode 156: And There It Is with Tom Hodges

Mike, Brett, and Derrick begin the episode by discussing the news that the CW show The Flash, and the CBS show Supergirl will finally be listening to fan demands, and will be crossing over in an upcoming episode.  We are all excited for that news.  That discussion leads us to talk about some of the more interesting plot points of both Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.     Another bit of news we discuss is the announcement that there will soon be a new version of the eighties classic show MacGuyver coming to the airwaves.  Brett and Derrick have loved MacGuyver since they were kids, and are very interested in this project.  Mike, on the other hand, is not much of a MacGuyver fan, but perhaps a new version will sway him.     All that MacGuyver talk leads us to the discussion of the MacGuyver episodes of Mythbuster.  We discuss some of our favorite moments of that show which is now on the final season believe it or not.     Finally, the We Be Geeks crew interview comic artist Tom Hodges who has just started a project on Kicstarter to fund a new venture he calls Antiis comics.  As Tom tells us, Antis is an anagram for the phrase “and there it is” which has an important meaning to him.  Tom, for those who don’t know has worked on some Lucasfilm comic projects, and has also created the map for a potential Star Wars Disney theme park which you have no doubt seen floating around the internet.  We discuss all of that over the course of the interview.  Tom was a great guest, and his Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1187933918/antiis-comics-presents-phase-one-launch) is worth checking out.
