Anyone over the age of 30 knows about Jeffrey Dahmer and likely remembers the details of his arrest and trial in the early 90s. Even if you’re younger, you no doubt recognize the name of the man who took the lives of 17 victims. Artist John “Derf” Backderf went to highschool with Dahmer in the 70s and in the graphic novel My Friend Dahmer, he recounts his interactions with him, how much of an outsider he really was and how the toxic family environment he lived in had a hand in creating the monster he was to become.  More

With the news in early August that Netflix has purchased comic book company Millarworld (publisher of Kick-Ass, Wanted, Jupiter’s Legacy and more) and with Kingsman: The Golden Circle in theaters, it seems a good time to have a post about The Secret Service, on which the Kingsman: The Secret Service movie is based. If you are familiar with Mark Millar’s work at all, whether in the comics or on the big screen, you know the potential levels of violence and general craziness to expect. But in most cases the plot is interesting and engaging, and the stories are well-written. The Secret Service is one of those cases.  More

Marvelette Missives – Happy 100, Mr. Kirby

Last month would have marked the 100th birthday of comic book icon Jack Kirby. For those not as familiar with the history of comics, Kirby was not only an artist, writer and editor, but he created some of the most well-known characters and styles that are still seen in comics today. His first, and biggest, character creation (working with artist Joe Simon) was in 1940: Captain America. Over his career he wrote, drew and/or created dozens of heroes and worked for Marvel and DC, as well as doing freelance work. He was a large part of what Stan Lee dubbed “the Marvel method” of creating comics in a particular style.  More

The big two comic book companies love their events and the most recent from Marvel, Secret Empire, just came to an end. The 10-issue storyline followed Captain America’s allegiance to HYDRA, his reign as supreme global ruler, the “heroes” who sided with him and those who opposed his rule and fought back. In the end, as with all events, there was a resolution but not without some changes to the Marvel universe.  More
