Captain America

Marvelette Missives – Calm Down, Son

Last week there was a major reveal in the new Captain America comic. For geeks living under a rock, the last page of the book had Captain America saying “Hail Hydra”. Obviously a huge twist and could mean major things for the character. So, of course, geeks took to the interwebs immediately to decry the horror of such a phrase coming from a beloved character. (As an aside, it really ticked me off that everyone threw the “no spoilers” cry aside and posted about this from early morning, before the majority of people could even get to their comic shop and buy the issue. Also, the loudest complainers seemed to be those who don’t even read comics!) More

Marvelette Missives – A Perfect War

It should come as no surprise that I saw Captain America: Civil War last weekend (well, Thursday night to be exact). I am a Marvel chick, after all. So I want to explain why I think this is an almost perfect superhero movie. (Very minor spoilers ahead – I don’t give away the good stuff.)

There are five important aspects to every superhero movie: plot, characters, pacing, humor and action. (These can be said to apply to all movies in varying degrees.) So let’s take each in turn and show what Civil War does right. More

Now Geek This! A Review of Captain America: Civil War

This week, I will be reviewing the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Civil War.  Civil War, directed by the brother team of Anthony and Joe Russo, is the third film in the Captain America franchise, and stars Chris Evans as the titular character, Captain America.  Civil War also stars an assembly (pun intended) of other actors portraying their familiar roles from other Marvel films, including Avengers, Ant-Man, and a movie that will be forthcoming. Now Geek This Reviews Avengers: Age of Ultron

nowgeekthisIn this edition of Now Geek This, I will be reviewing a movie you may have heard of called Avengers: Age of Ulton.  Age of Ultron is the sequel to the 2012 mega Marvel hit Avengers, and the latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Age of Ultron is directed by the incomparable genius, Joss Whedon, and stars a cavalcade of stars reprising their Marvel roles, including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, and Chris Hemsworth as the thunder go Thor, as well as a few new characters such as the Scarlet Witch played by Elisabeth Olson, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver.  Of course, let’s not forget the amazing James Spader as the voice of the titular villain, Ultron.

The real question regarding this movie is whether it is a brilliant sequel, like Empire Strikes Back or Godfather II, or does is suffer the fate of so many inferior movie sequels?  Read on to find out True Believer! More

Now Geek This: Marvel Movie Madness!

nowgeekthisIt is a good time to be a Marvel fan.  As a longtime comic book reader, and a huge Marvel fan going back to my childhood days, it has always been a dream of mine to see my favorite Marvel superheroes on the big screen.  For the first half of my life, that dream seemed impossible.  Marvel’s rival, DC comics had a couple of good movies under their belt starring their biggest characters like Superman and Batman, yet Marvel had nothing to offer their fans  but failed attempts or cheesy interpretations of their characters.

Now Geek This: Big Game Movie Trailers

cooltext1205573672

Whether you are a sports fan or not, I’m sure that you are aware that this past Sunday was the Big Game, which is the championship game for football for those who might not know.  It has a more commonly uses name, but the footbal people don’t like you to use it unless you pay for it, so I won’t.  One of the most popular features of the Big Game are the commercials shown during the breaks in gameply.  Companies spend literally millions of dollars on comercial spots during the Big Game, and the commercials end up being almost as popular as the game.  This year, there were also a couple of extended trailers for upcoming movies that I am very interested in.  I think the best way to discuss these trailers is to take each one individually.
